Brazen Altars

brazen altars

also: ehernen Altäre, brazen altar

Ancient sacrificial altars made of bronze, invoked in Grodek as an ironic image recasting the battlefield as a site of ritual slaughter. In Trakl's apostrophe, they are fed by spiritual pain and the lives of the unborn rather than by blood offerings.
