Saint Sebastian
Sebastian
also: Sebastian, Sebastianus
Christian martyr (died c. 288 AD), a Roman soldier secretly converted, who was shot with arrows by order of Diocletian. He survived the arrows but was later clubbed to death. Sebastian is one of the most celebrated martyrs of the Church — his wounded body a recurring image of beauty and suffering in Western art. The title of Trakl's second collection invokes him as a figure of dreaming martyrdom.
